Explore the Wonders of Chon-Kemin Valley
Chon-Kemin, situated 148 km east of Bishkek, is a captivating region nestled between the Tian Shan mountain range, separating Kyrgyzstan to the south and Kazakhstan to the north. Known for its rich natural diversity, Chon-Kemin encompasses a picturesque valley, a dramatic gorge, a powerful river, and a national park teeming with life and adventure.
The Chon-Kemin Valley begins at the edge of the Chui Valley and stretches eastward to the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake, covering about 100 km. The terrain transitions from a narrow gorge to a wide valley in the central area before narrowing again at the western end. Elevations range from 1,400 meters in the west to 2,800 meters in the east. The Chon-Kemin River, spanning 116 kilometers, originates from glaciers and flows through the valley, eventually joining the Chu River. The fertile land along its banks supports agriculture and livestock farming, with vibrant orchards adding beauty to the region, especially in spring.
Chon-Kemin offers something for every adventurer:
Established in 1997, Chon-Kemin National Park spans 500 hectares, protecting rare flora and fauna. Visitors may encounter snow leopards, Tien Shan bears, Turkestan lynxes, and more. The park is home to unique bird species such as the black stork, golden eagle, and ibisbill. With its coniferous and mixed forests, the park offers scenic trails and a healing atmosphere.
The recently opened Ak-Tyuz Ski Base features Austrian cable cars with double chairlifts and draglines. With tracks ranging from 1 to 2 kilometers and reaching up to 2,500 meters above sea level, it’s a perfect spot for winter sports enthusiasts.
At an altitude of 3,120–3,450 meters, this moraine-dammed lake dazzles with its emerald-green waters surrounded by high mountains. The coniferous forests and abundance of berries, mushrooms, and medicinal herbs make it a serene retreat.
Also known as Kel-Ter, this 16-hectare lake is perched at 2,420–2,465 meters above sea level. Its clear bluish waters and surrounding spruce forests create a breathtaking landscape. Reaching the lake requires a hike of 3–21 km depending on the chosen path, with options for cable car crossings or longer trails from Tehgirmenti village.
Chon-Kemin Valley combines adventure, tranquility, and natural beauty. Whether exploring the vast wilderness of the national park, rafting down the Chon-Kemin River, or marveling at its serene mountain lakes, the region offers unforgettable experiences for every traveler.
